How early should we book a hotel during high season

We're coming to patong in Jan 2010 in a group of 3 guys. How early should we book a hotel to avoid it being fully booked?

If you're coming for sure then the earlier you book the better. You may get a cheaper price if you book well in advance and of course you can also avoid not getting a room.
